As we entering 2011...
President Nihat Berker

Dear graduate,

In these first few days of 2011, I would like to share some of the highlights of 2010 on behalf of the Sabancı University family.

This year, we admitted 635 new undergraduate students following the 2010 university entrance exams.  Our total number of students reached 3650, 2953 of whom are undergraduate students.  Also in the 2009-2010 academic year, the number of graduates became 4042, and exceeded the number of students.

162 students went to universities in Europe as exchange students, and 170 students from Europe came to our university.  With a total of 237 faculty members, we now have 15.4 students per faculty member.

The number of active projects conducted by our faculty exceeds 200.  Of these, 54%are supported by TÜBİTAK, 16% by the EU, 16% by the industry and consultancy companies, and the remainder by the DPT, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and some international funds.

The exhibitions at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum included Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum, Legendary Istanbul – From Byzantium to Istanbul: 8000 Years of a Capital, Transcending Borders with Brush and Pen: Selected Works of Eastern and Western Calligraphy, and Venice and Istanbul during the Ottoman Period; Love, by any other name.  The Performing Arts Center, a key differentiating factor of our campus life, reached 165,000 people.

We had opportunities to come together with our graduates with the “Family Day at the Museum” on February 11th, the US Graduates Meeting on April 30th, the Homecoming and Reunion on campus on July 2nd and 3rd, the regular “Movie Days” on campus, and various SUMED events held in different parts of the city.  In 2011, I will continue to meet our alumni at every opportunity, connecting with this ever-growing part of the Sabancı University family.

The athletics events held by our Scholarship Fund helped create awareness and a difference with your support, and extended aid to more students.  As part of the annual donation campaign, we collected Commencement Class Donations from the Class of 2010.  The Board of Trustees matched this donation, doubling the amount.

Our university established the Istanbul International Energy and Climate Center, an exemplary step in community involvement.  The center will be led by Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency, to conduct important research and develop new energy policies.

Supported by our alumni, we continue to strive to make our university one of the best in the world.

Our main objectives for 2011 include:

•    More internationalization;
•    The inauguration of the Sabancı University Nanotechnology Application and Research Center (SUNUM);
•    The establishment of new chairs;
•    New cooperation agreements in education.

As a member of an institution that facilitates scientific and technological development, achieves national and international renown in the dissemination of the knowledge generated within, and enjoys added strength with its great alumni, I feel very fortunate, just like you do.

I hope that 2011 brings you more of the good things you enjoy, and is a healthy, successful, pleasant year for you and your loved ones.

Best regards,

Nihat Berker
