Subject-Based Discussion by Sibel Irzık

Psychoanalysis, Culture, and Everyday Life

Sibel Irzık

What is an Oedipus complex, and do you have one? What does it mean to have part of your own psyche unknown to you? What are the costs of civilization? Are we all neurotics and is everything about sex?

This talk will address common questions like these and provide a brief introduction to the founding ideas in Sigmund Freud’s work in order to explore how those ideas shape our modern understanding of dreams, desires, love, sexuality, neurosis, culture, and society. Presenting examples from Freudian analyses of jokes, ‘slips,’ dreams, and literary and cinematic texts, we will consider what kind of knowledge psychoanalysis produces and what the status of such knowledge might be. This consideration will also extend to currently wide-spread ‘applications’ of psychoanalytical concepts like repression, trauma, mourning, and melancholy to social experiences and cultural phenomena.
